Anatomy of the Biomedical Journal Article:
How Non-Native English Speakers Can Publish, Not Perish
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1.  To understand the process of preparation of a journal article for submission to an English language medical journal
2.  To understand the IMRAD construction
3.  To format an article to the style of a particular journal
4.  To better understand English language usage

COURSE METHODS:
1.  Oral slide presentation of the overview of the article construction and improving writing skills in English
2.  Hands-on exercises to compare and contrast authors guidelines and articles from different journals
3.  Hands-on exercise to edit an unstructured abstract into a structured one
4.  Handouts of slides, guidelines, articles, course outline, bibliography of style guides, the "Uniform Requirements," and medical  journal
     Web pages

Session 1 Outline:  Manuscript Preparation
I.    Reasons why manuscripts are rejected
II.  Compare and contrast the publishing style of different English language journals
III. Types of articles
IV. Knowing your audience - Generalist, Specialist, Public
V.  Writing the article
VI. Illustrations (Figures and Tables)
VI. Before submitting your article

Session 2 Outline:  Improving Your English Writing Skills
I.    Comparison of your language versus  English
      (particularly skilled in comparison of Portuguese and Arabic with English, but can work with other languages if writing samples in English
       by speakers of other languages are provided ahead of time)
II.   English grammar
III.  Nomenclature

*The American Medical Association Manual of Style, 9th Edition is the used as the basis for this course.

Speaking With Power:
How to Keep Your English-Speaking Audience Spellbound

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1.  To be able to prepare a talk so that it is effective and aimed at the right audience
2.  To be able to better deliver a public presentation
3.  To be a more confident, comfortable public speaker

COURSE METHODS:
1.  Oral slide presentation outlining how to prepare a talk from audience to organization
2.  Demonstration of how to deliver a talk acting out the do's and don'ts
3.  Audience participation - volunteers from the audience who would like to presednt a short prepared speech (furnished in the handout) and
     be  critiqued by others
4.  Handouts - copies of the slides, bibliography of books on public speaking, sample talk to practice
